Thomas Deaton papers

Scope and Contents

This collection contains Thomas Deaton's financial, legal, and personal papers, the bulk of which pertain to the Civil War. Financial records include deeds of purchase for land and enslaved persons, as well as affidavits of sales. Also included is a diary he wrote while working at a Confederate hospital in which he recorded personal notes, information about meetings, records of the weather, and copied obituaries. Correspondence documents Deaton’s sale of grain to the Confederate Army.

Thomas M. Coleman letter

Scope and Content This collection is comprised of one letter written by Coleman to his sister, possibly named Lizzie Coleman, on July 29, 1864, written from a “camp south of Atlanta.” Coleman provides a firsthand account of the Atlanta Campaign describing the charge and repulsion of the "rebels," the reclaiming of lost artillery pieces, and capture of Confederate soldiers. Thomas Maguire papers

Scope and Content The majority of the Thomas Maguire papers revolves around plantation records from 1834 to 1876. There are two ledgers Maguire kept from 1834-1838, and 1838-1839 with chronological lists of purchases of various quantities of supplies. An account book from 1883 to 1884 contains similar information. A third account book belonged to John E. and James H.C. and recorded shipments of goods in rleation to their mill from 1879-1890. Transcription of John Barnett letter

This collection is a transcription of a letter written by John Barnett, a soldier in the Wisconsin 25th Infantry to "Brother Tom." The letter was written near Gainesville, Georgia. He describes movements across the Chattahoochee River to Kennesaw Mountain and on to Resaca. Date of transcription is unknown but definitely before 1956.

Transcription of Lewis H. Andrews Civil War diary

This collection contains a transcription of a diary written by Lewis H. Andrews of the Eighth Georgia Regiment, Longstreet's Corps. The diary entries chronicle a three week trip of a party of Confederate soldiers from Appomattox, Virginia to their homes in Georgia. This is a transcription of the diary which appeared in the Atlanta Journal May 21, 1904.

Transcriptions of Josiah Blair Patterson Civil War letters

This collection contains transcriptions of letters from Lieutenant Josiah Blair Patterson of the Company E, 14th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, A. P. Hill's Light Division, Army of Northern Virginia. Most of the correspondence consists of letters he wrote to his family from Virginia and what is now West Virginia. The collection also includes an annotated outline of the 14th Regiment's organization and history, and the campaigns and battles in which it is known to have participated.

Transcriptions of Norton-Towers diaries
