Sam White probate court report

Scope and Content

This collection consists of a handwritten copy of a report made to the probate court of Hancock County, Mississippi, in 1853. In it, the guardian of Thomas Doby's children, Sam White, states the approximate date and place of death of two of Doby's children, Raphael and Eliza. White also reports the "death by accidental burning" of a slave child, Octave, who belonged to the Doby children.

Samuel Bachtell Civil War letter

This collection consists of a letter written by Samuel Bachtell to his wife in which he describes military maneuvers which led to the capture of Atlanta, Georgia. He also describes the destruction of military property by the fleeing Confederate forces and the joy the army felt about capturing Atlanta.

Samuel G. French and John Corse Civil War correspondence

This collection contains two letters dated October 5, 1864 that pertain to the Battle of Allatoona Pass. One letter is from Major General S. G. French of the Confederate States of America demanding the commanding Union officer to surrender his troops. The other letter is a reply to Major General S.G. French from Brigadier General John W. Corse in which he refuses to surrender.

The collection contains Samuel R. Belk's diary, which contains a page of recordings for every day of 1926. One page includes a newspaper clipping which mentions Samuel Belk by name.
