Scope and Content
This collection contains portraits of Reverend Sam P. Jones, as well as his immediate and extended family. Photographs depict family and friends in front of "The Cottage," Jones' residence in Cartersville, Georgia; celebrations such as Sam Jones' 50th birthday; Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts, where Jones held revival meetings. Other photographs include portraits Tom Dunham, Jones' secretary, and the Jones family cook, Mat McCoy. Of particular note is a group portrait of Foreign Christian Missionary Society members outside the Jones residence. All locations are unknown unless otherwise noted.

Administrative/Biographical History
Samuel Porter Jones (1847-1906) was born in Oak Bowery, Alabama, to John J. Jones (1826-1872) and Nancy Sarah "Queenie" Porter (1826-1852). After his mother's death, he and his siblings went to live with their grandparents in Cartersville, Georgia. In 1859, John Jones married Jane Skinner (1827-1895) and settled permanently in Cartersville, Georgia. Samuel P. Jones studied law and was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1868. He married Laura McElwain (1850-1926) the same year and the couple had seven children: Beulah (1869-1871); Mary (1871-1955); Annie Cordelia (1873-1924); Samuel Paul (1875-1926); Robert (1877-1907); Laura (1881-1931); and Julia (1885-1965).
In 1872, Samuel P. Jones entered the ministry. He studied at the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and preached as a Van Wert circuit minister covering four counties. In 1880, the conference appointed him as the fundraising agent for the Methodist Orphan Home (later the United Methodist Children's Home) in Decatur, Georgia.
