Troutman and Battey family papers
Scope and Content
The bulk of the Troutman and Battey family papers are legal documents (many from Floyd Country) generated by those families, including deeds of indenture (many signed by Dr. Robert Battey), wills, and an abstract of title to lands in Floyd County. The collection also contains correspondence, the majority of which was sent to Colonel Hiram Bainbridge Troutman, a book of Minstrel song, and documents pertaining to Atlanta society.

Administrative/Biographical History
Colonel Hiram Bainbridge Troutman (1797-1880) was born in Stanford, Kentucky. He moved to Georgia, married Balsora N. Ellis (1803-1836), and had seven children; Joana Ellis (1818-1879), Cornelia (1818-1879), John Fielding (1823-), Isaac (1826-1828), Marcellus Lyttleton (1828-1903), Hiram A. (1832-1868), and George W. (1833-1880). In 1851, Hiram married Sarah Williamson Bird (1802-1879). Marcellus Lyttleton married Mary Frances Branham (1831-1895) in 1851 and served in the Confederate Army; they had four children, Valinda Balsora (1854-1866), Henry Bainbridge, Dr. Marcellus Lyttleton Jr. (1861-1912), and Mary Cordelia (1864-1924). Marcellus Lyttleton Troutman Jr., a minister at the Athens Methodist Church, married Elizabeth (Bessie) Battey (1863-1943) in 1883.
Administrative/Biographical History
Elizabeth (Bessie) Battey was one of 13 children born to Confederate hospital supervisor Dr. Robert Battey (1828-1895) and Martha Baldwin Smith (1831-1922). Her paternal grandparents were Cephus Battey (1804-1835) and Mary Agnes Magruder (1805-); her maternal grandparents were William Thorton Smith (1808-1852) and Elizabeth Mayo (1802-). Marcellus Jr. and Elizabeth (Bessie) Battey had five children, Baldwin Lyttleton Sr. (1884-1964), Charles Reeve Troutman (1885-1905), Henry Battey (1886-1978), Grace Branham (1888-1980), and Robert Battey Troutman Jr. (1890-1973). Robert Battey Troutman Jr. and his brother Henry served in World War I and remained active lawyers in Atlanta until their deaths.
Administrative/Biographical History
Both the Troutman and the Battey families lived in various Georgia cities (including Commerce, Augusta, Vinenille, Springs, Atlanta, and Athens) but were particularly established in the city of Rome in Floyd County. The families were active landholders and businessmen.
