Promissory note and scrapbook
Scope and Content
This collection contains a promissory note to pay John Boutwell the sum of $80.00 for the service of a "negro slave named Reubin" in 1852. The transaction was executed by Harold & Murray on 177 Broad Street. The state in which the transaction occurred has not been determined. The note was found inside a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings on various Civil War battles, short stories and poetry, probably published in the 1860's. At the end of the scrapbook are several hand-written pages containing the poem "The Day is Done" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
