Scope and Content

This collection consists of a book entitled “Album of Love,” which contains 16 hand-written poems of love and remembrance for Margaret Catherine Baker Love, written by friends and family members during her attendance at the Atlanta Female Institute. The book was dedicated by her teacher at the Institute, A. G. Thomas. There is also a poem, “To the Memory of Her I Love,” written by Catherine’s husband after her death, dated 20 April, 1882. The book contains 5 lithographs and an undated newspaper clipping on the death of Absalom Baker, Margaret’s father. The cover lists genealogical information relating the donor to Margaret.

Administrative/Biographical History

Margaret Catherine Baker Love was born 17 November 1844, as one of seven children, to Absalom Baker (1811-1876) and Elizabeth Kennedy Baker (1811-1886). Her father, Absalom Baker, was a steward for the Methodist Episcopal Church and also proprietor of Baker’s Chattahoochee River Ferry in Howell’s District, Cobb County. She attended The Atlanta Female Institute in the 1860s. She married Lt. David Donaldson Kolb Love (1844-1892) of Austell, Georgia, a member of the Army of Virginia. They had seven children including a daughter, Elizabeth Patton Love, who married Elias Alexander Cochran and another daughter, Mabel E. Cochran Love, who married Robert L. Harris. Margaret Catherine Baker Love died 17 December, 1881 and is buried in the Absalom Baker Family Cemetery in Cobb County, Georgia.
