Scope and Contents
This collection contains photographs, slides, and postcards that document Tankard's career in landscape history research, lecturing, and writing. Included in the collection are images of Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, Virginia, owned by John Lee Pratt (1879-1975) and Lillian Thomas Pratt (1876-1947). Also a part of the collection are house and garden images documenting Tankard’s research and travels in North America and Europe. These images highlight the work of landscape architects such as Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959), Ellen Shipman (1869-1950) and landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932), and architect Edwin Luytens (1869-1944).

Biographical / Historical
Judith B. Tankard (1942- ), originally from New York, is an author, lecturer, preservation consultant, and independent scholar specializing in American and British garden history. She is the author of several landscape history books, such as Ellen Shipman and the American Garden (2018) andGardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement (2019) as well as numerous articles and book reviews. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and a Master of Arts degree in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. Tankard taught at the Landscape Institute of Harvard University from 1988 to 2007. She also served as president and long-time board member of the Beatrix Farrand Society. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society awarded her a Gold Medal for her work in the promotion of historic New England gardens. Tankard is a frequent lecturer on topics such as the preservation of historic landscapes and pioneer landscape architects.

This collection is arranged in three series: Series I: Chatham Manor and Pratt Family, arranged by photograph number as they were in an orginal album; Series II: Houses and Gardens, Travel Collection; and Series III: Book Research. Series II and III are arranged in alphabetical order and some control numbers are intentionally out of numerical order to maintain alphabetical order.
