Scope and Content

These papers document the ownership history of several tracts of land in District 14 of Atlanta, Georgia, between 1822 and 1925. Including land lots are 119, 197, 198, 231, and 232. The collection consists of land grants, deeds, and papers primarily of the Childress and Bryant families. There are also papers regarding the land transactions of the White, Thomas, Mangum, Mitchell, Wooten, Thrasher, Guyton, Willis, and Suttles families. The land stayed within the Childress and Bryant families either through blood or marriage. Also included is a plat map and advertisement for the W.W. White estate. Of special note is ephemera from Francis White's billfold.

Administrative/Biographical History

Jesse J. Childress (1812-1878) married Henrietta Reeves (1813-1841) and they had two children; John Asbury DeJarnette "J.A.D." Childress (1836-1905) and James Strawberry Childress (1838-1862). After Henrietta died, Jesse married Jane Louisa Reeves (1826-1902) in 1842 and they had 10 children: Sarah Elizabeth Lee (1843-1921); Mahaley Embry (1845-1933); Ezekiel Jesse Childress (1846-1902); Mary K. Willis (1849-1912); Nancy Ann Willis (1851-1895); Harriet Hepsie Wallis (1853-1886); Rosa Pink Abercrombie (1855-1895); William Anderson Childress (1857-1932); Alexander H. Stephens Childress (1859-1927); and Susan M. Reeves (1866-1929). J.A.D. Childress married Sarah Elizabeth Bryant (1842-1872) in 1860. William Bryant (1810-1888) and Rebecca (Chambless) Bryant (1818-1896) married in 1836 and had John Thomas "J.T." Bryant (1839-1911); Martha Emma (Bryant) Roberts (1851-1928); and Sarah Elizabeth (Bryant) Childress, along with 11 other children. William W. White (1838-?), served in the 6th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company K., of the Confederate Army. William W. White's relative, Francis M. White, is also represented in the collection.
