Robert Wigham Letter
Scope and Content
This collection contains two copies and two transcripts of a letter written by Robert Wigham from Haltwhistle, Northumberland, England to his cousin Isaac Hall in New York. In his letter, Wigham tells Hall that he is sorry to hear of his wife’s recent death. Wigham then goes on to explain various aspects of England’s viewpoint of the American Civil War. These viewpoints include: that the North is fighting to preserve the union as opposed to fighting for the end of slavery, the South should be allowed to leave the union, and that they think it will be a long war that the North will most likely not win. The remaining portion of the letter discusses the health of family members in England.
