Mason I. Lowance photograph collection
Scope and Content
This collection contains images from the 1958 Harvest Ball at the Piedmont Driving Ball and is mostly of couples as they enter into the ballroom. Also included are slides from the 1962 Atlanta Art Association trip, in which 106 of the passengers were Atlanta art patrons who died in the crash as the plane was taking off. Also includes a slide of the front cover of the Atlanta Constitution for June 4, 1962.

Biographical History
Mason Lowance (1938-) is the son of Mason (1900-1984) and Kathleen Bowden Lowance; his mother was one of the founders of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He grew up on West Wesley Road in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, before completing his undergrauate studies at Princeton University. Lowance then went on to receive a master's degree in English Literature at Oxford University in England, and his Ph.D from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He taught American Literature at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1967 until he retired in 2017.
Biographical History
His wife, Susan Coltrane, is a native Atlantan as well, who grew up in the Ansley Park neighborhood. She received her MBA from the Yale School of Management, and later served as the Director of the Management Program for women executives at Smith College and then became the first female Director of the Sloan Fellow Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They met in London during the 1962 Atlanta Art Association trip. Most of the trip's participants died when their plane crashed on take off in Orly, France, on June 3, 1962. They married on July 19, 1963 and had two daughters: Susan Radcliffe and Margaret Elizabeth Lowance Rorick.
