Administrative/Biographical History

Er Lawshe (1824-1897) was born in Union County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1848 with two of his brothers. Lawshe worked as a cabinet maker apprentice and later opened a jewelry shop with Riley Baker. Lawshe married Sarah Winifred Peck (1835-1894) in Atlanta on August 8. 1854. The couple had five children: John Zimmerman Lawshe (1856-1927); William Peck Lawshe (1858-1892); Er Lawshe Jr. (1872-1947); Annie Lawshe Hardeman (1863-1951); and Mary Margaret Lawshe (1866-1946). John Zimmerman Lawshe married Willie James Elder (1869-1951) on February 11, 1891. They had one daughter, Martha (1892-1991). Er Lawshe built a two-story home on 224 Peachtree Street, which adjoined property owned by his in-laws. At the beginning of the Civil War, Lawshe received a captain's commission and served throughout the duration of the war in the Confederate Army. In addition to being an active Mason, he was involved with the First Methodist Church and founded the Old Wesley Chapel. Later in his life, Lawshe wrote stories for the Atlanta Constitution.
