Administrative/Biographical History
Raymond Bryan Carneal (1901-1989) was born in Ruther Glen, Virginia, to Edward P. Carneal (1877-) and Sallie W. Carneal (1880-). He had one sibling, Perry G. Carneal (1905- ). In 1919, Raymond B. Carneal married Bertha Mullen and they had five children. The family moved to Durham, North Carolina, in 1925. He served as a brakeman and railroad conductor on the Southern Railway. Carneal conducted research throughout the South, studying railroading and compiling rosters of all the railroads in the South. By 1935, Carneal acquired a library of railroad books, periodicals, and amassed a collection of approximately 11,000 photographic negatives, many of which pertain to various aspects of railroading. Carneal coauthored the article, "Locomotives of the Western & Atlantic Railroad" with James G. Bogle for the Atlanta Historical Bulletin (later named Atlanta History: A Journal of Georgia and the South).
