Scope and Content

This collection contains two albums of black and white photographs. The images are of Irene Sherard, her family and her friends. Most of the images are undated and are taken in outdoor settings. The subjects of the images appear to be young men and women participating in group activities in playful outdoor settings. Locations of the photographs include Brookhaven, Grant Park, Lithia Springs, and Little St. Simon's Island, Georgia. Some of the images have captions written by Irene Sherard. All photographs appear to have been taken between approximately 1900 and 1925.

Administrative/Biographical History

Irene Toy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, January 3, 1891 and lived in Atlanta her entire life. She was the oldest of four children born to John H. and Laura Toy. Her siblings were Helen (b. February 24, 1895); Nellie (b. 1896); and Maria (b. 1902). She was employed as a stenographer before her marriage to Leo Sherard, an Atlana architect, on June 17, 1914 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Sherards had one child, Charlotte Jean Sherard Brinkley (b. February 24, 1918). Irene Toy Sherard died September 29, 1976 in Atlanta, Georgia.
