Scope and Content
This collection contains one handwritten "slave deed" from Sumter County, Georgia. The deed states that Josiah Scrutchin bequeathed a woman named Lettice and her child to his son, Samuel Scrutchin. The collection also includes a short Scrutchin genealogy recorded by Josiah Scrutchin's descendant, Elaine Tyler of Atlanta, Georgia.

Administrative/Biographical History
Josiah Scrutchin (1781-1850) lived in Sumter County, Georgia. In 1808, he married Sarah Greene (1791-1853) and they had five children: William Augustus J. (1825-1863), Lucinda (1811-?), Sarah Jane (1830-?), Thomas (1820-1899), and Samuel (1832-?). Josiah owned plantations in Sumter and Lee counties; in 1850 the Scrutchin family reported owning at least 40 enslaved people.
