William Crabtree papers
Scope and Content
This collection documents William Crabtree’s role as the Local 134 union president during litigious proceedings affecting union members. It includes court cases filed on the part of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Local 134; the city of Atlanta; and the federal government. All cases concerned discriminatory hiring practices. The collection contains grievances filed by Local 134 members concerning compensation and employment dismissal. There are statistics illustrating Atlanta’s Bureau of Fire Services’ employee breakdown, emergency response instances, and personal and property damages, along with brief bomb squad activity reports. There is a Bureau of Fire services recruitment plan and a report on salaries and working conditions in U.S. cities of 400,000- plus inhabitants.

Administrative/Biographical History
William Crabtree (1944- ) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to William M. Crabtree, Jr. and Laura Wills. He graduated from Murphy High School in Atlanta and subsequently joined the Atlanta Fire Department in 1970. Crabtree married Linda Connor in 1975, and attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia in the 1980s; he completed multiple certificates through the National Fire Academy; attained the rank of Battalion Chief in the Atlanta Fire Department; and served as the president of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Local 134 in Atlanta, Georgia, which represents and lobbies for fire fighter interests in both the United States and Canada.
