Scope and Content
The collection consists of documents from Ernest Howington's military service. These include Howington's service records, discharge papers, billet cards, and notebook. There is also a copy of the Seventh Infantry Division's newspaper, The Hour Glass, from June 5, 1919, which contained articles about the Army's demobilization.

Administrative/Biographical History
Ernest Howington (1895-1984) was the son of Henry Jackson Howington (1867-1939) and Clarissa D. Howington (1874-1962). He enlisting in the Army in 1917 at Fort McPherson, Georgia and later served as a corporal in the 56th Infantry Division of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He was honorably discharged in 1919. Howington worked as a farmer and was married to Minnie Lee Smith Howington (1901-1989), with whom he had six children, including Dorris M. and Billie Smith (1925-1990).
