Herbert S. Alden medical prescriptions
Scope and Content
This collection contains forty-three handwritten prescriptions written by sixteen Atlanta physicians. There are two prescriptions from 1891 that do not contain the prescribing physician's name. All of the prescriptions except one (1918) are handwritten. Some of the handwritten prescriptions appear to indicate a certain type of medicine prescribed for medical treatment, but most are illegible. The prescribing physicians include Dr. J. F. Alexander, Dr. C. C. Aven, Dr. James Baird, Dr. Benson, Dr. Hunter P. Cooper, Dr. Ebbert, Dr. J. McF. Gaston, Dr. V. O. Hardon, Dr. Hugh M. Lokey, Dr. M. W. Manahan, Dr. C. E. Murphey, Dr. R. B. Ridley, Dr. A. L. Strong, Dr. J. S. Todd, Dr. G. A. Vinson, and Dr. W. C. Warren. Some of the prescriptions indicate patient names, which include Miss Allbritton, Mr. E. F. Clarke, Mrs. J. W. Rawkin, Mrs. VanBibler, and Mrs. Wright.

Administrative/Biographical History
Herbert Steed Alden (1901-1989), son of William Alden and Alice Burma Steed Alden, was born on May 23, 1901, in Boston, Massachussetts. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia (1924). During World War II, Dr. Alden served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy and participated at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. Dr. Alden was the head of Alden Dermatology Associates and practiced medicine in Atlanta, Georgia for over 50 years. He served on staff at Georgia Baptist Hospital, Grady Hospital, and Piedmont Hospital. He was a member of the Medical Association of Atlanta, Atlanta Clinical Society, Atlanta Dermatology Society, and Georgia Dermatology Society. Dr. Alden was also a member of the Piedmont Driving Club and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He retired from medical practice in 1979. He died of lung cancer on June 6, 1989 and is buried at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Additional biographical information about Herbert S. Alden has not been determined.
