Administrative/Biographical History
The Penthouse Theatre, a theatre-in-the-round located on the top floor of the Ansley Hotel, opened its first season in Atlanta, Georgia, in September of 1949. The theatre was founded by Elsbeth Hofman, her husband Don Gibson, and their college classmate Jerry Appy. It was the first theater of its kind to be a commercial success. In October of 1950 its production of the play Tobacco Road caused much controversy and was successful enough to warrant a return engagement in January of 1951. Additional historical information about the Penthouse Theatre has not been determined.
