Ella May Powell scrapbooks
Scope and Content
This collection contains a scrapbook and scrapbook fragments. Materials collected in the scrapbook include poetry, newspaper clippings, speeches, DeGive's Opera House programs, an 1885 edition of the Sunny South, and documentation about the life of Powell's father, Fielding Travis Powell. Of particular note are documents on Powell's advocacy of Confederate Monuments and the suffragist movement, two medicine recipes, and an image of the Georgia College of Eclectic Medicine and Surgery.

Administrative/Biographical History
Ella May Powell (1863-1955) was a native Atlantan born to Dr. Fielding Travis Powell (1828-1898) and Martha Ann Jincie Powell (1831-1913). She was a socialite, a national speaker, author, and lecturer on the psychology and technique of singing and speaking. She published three books, Clio, a Child of Fate (1889), Winona, a Story of To-Day (1894) and Women Who Laugh (1896). In addition, she was an advocate for Confederate memorials and women's suffrage and spoke publicly in support of both. She later moved to New York and Washington, D.C., to teach a music course called Psychology and Technique of Speech and Song.
