Scope and Content
This collection consists of the official letters Moses Hannibal Wright received prior to and during the opening days of the Civil War. Of particular interest is Wright's letter of resignation from the United States Ordnance Department and the letters detailing Wright's promotions within the Confederate Ordnance Department.

Administrative/Biographical History
Moses Hannibal Wright (1836-1886) was born in Tennessee. He graduated seventh in his class from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1859. After graduating, he worked in the United States Ordnance Bureau in New York City, New York and St. Louis, Missouri. When the Civil War began, Wright resigned from his position and joined the Confederate Ordnance Bureau, accepting a position in the armory in Nashville, Tennessee. In February 1862, Wright moved the Nashville Armory to Atlanta, Georgia. Additional biographical information about Moses Hannibal Wright has not been determined.
