Allen C. Smith papers
Scope and Content
This collection contains the manuscript and research for Allen C. Smith's thesis, The Republican Party in Georgia, 1867-1871. It was completed as part of his master's degree from Duke University in 1936. Also included are essays by Smith entitled The Union League in Georgia, The Secession Fight in Georgia, and Aggressive Slavocracy in Georgia, as well as research and bibliographic notes covering these topics. There is raw data on the 1860 election in Georgia and slave populations of Georgia counties in 1850. The collection contains bills and receipts from his time as Superintendent of Dixie Consolidated Schools in Georgia and personal correspondence with his wife.

Administrative/Biographical History
Allen Candler Smith was born in 1906 in Turner, Georgia, to Wilbur and Pearl Smith. He attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and completed a master's degree in history in 1936. He was the Superintendent of the Dixie Consolidated Schools near Quitman, Georgia. Smith married Anne Sanderson of Houston, Texas on August 16, 1938, and had two children, Virginia and Allen, Jr. Additional biographical information about Allen C. Smith has not been determined.
