Scope and Content

This collection consists of two scrapbooks kept by Charles F. Rice from 1893-1912. Topics in the books include national and international politicians, world's fairs and expositions, and elections. Information on elections includes newspaper articles from the Atlanta Constitution and the Atlanta Journal about local and state-wide Democratic and Republican elections from 1902-1906. Images and printed biographies of contemporary senators, judges, congressmen, , and ambassadors, as well as foreign diplomats and royalty are taken from other printed material. Also included are images of buildings from the Chicago World's Fair (also known as the World's Columbian Exposition) in 1893, and also views of the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition.

Administrative/Biographical History

Charles F. Rice (1867-1928) was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Franklin P. and Mary (Mitchell) Rice. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1887, Charles became a bookkeeper for the Fulton County Street Railroad Company. He later worked as Atlanta correspondent for the Macon Telegraph, and also became involved in local politics. Charles was appointed Chief Deputy City Clerk of the Atlanta City Council in 1893; served as Chief Clerk of the Court of Ordinary under Ordinary William H. Hulsey; and also served as Chief Deputy of Clerk of the State Senate. He was the director of the Young Men's Library Association until 1897 and was active in the Young Men's Democratic League, holding the position of Secretary in 1897. He retired from public life and worked in real estate, managing his family's estates.
