Administrative/Biographical History

Brigadier General Benjamin Mart Bailey was born July 3, 1881 in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. He attended Syracuse University and St. Johns School, Manlius, N.Y. Later, he attended General Staff College in 1923 and Army War College in 1929. General Bailey joined the Army's Field Artillery Division, serving in the Philippines, 1908-1909, the Mexican Border Patrol, 1915-1916, moving up the ranks from 2nd Lieutenant to Major. General Bailey also served with the American Expeditionary Force in France in World War I as a Major and Lieutenant Colonel, 1917-1918. He was then promoted to full Colonel in command of the 12th and 37th Field Artillery Brigades and then to Brigadier General. He married Rosalie Davis of Atlanta, Georgia on November 18, 1915. The Baileys had a son, Benjamin Mart Bailey, Jr., who also joined the Army. He was killed in World War II. General Bailey died April 15, 1945 and was buried in Westview Cemetery. Mrs. Bailey died March 2, 1955 and is also buried in Westview Cemetery.
