Frederick William Lucas (1894-1966) was born in Athens, Georgia to John Hamlin Lucas and Kate Walker Moreno Lucas on 4 September 1894. His family, which include one brother, Theodore Moreno Lucas, and two sisters Kate Lucas and Mary Lucas (Butler), moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1900. As a young man he trained in the cotton brokerage firm of F. M. Crump and Company. He later worked for Cook and Company cotton brokerage, before opening his own firm Fred W. Lucas and Company in 1943. In addition to his military service in World War I, Fred Lucas also served the Memphis community as President of the Memphis Cotton Exchange, the Southern Cotton Shippers Association, the American Legion, and the American Red Cross. At the time of his death, he was unmarried and survived by his two sisters. Mary Lucas was also born in Athens, Georgia. She attended Washington University before being named Headmistress of the Lauzanne’s Private Girls School in Memphis. She was an active member of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, serving for a time as President of the Association. She died in Memphis in 1967.
