Administrative/Biographical History
Fitzhugh Knox, Sr. (1867-1940) was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1867. He was the fourth son born to Elizabeth Welsh Horner (1835- 1923) and John Somerville Knox, II (1827-1906), both of Virginia. Fitzhugh Knox, Sr. came to Atlanta in October 1883. On April 22, 1891, he married Lena Reynolds Baber (1870-?) with whom he had nine children. He worked with Kelly Rosser and Company (cotton factors), then with J. Regenstein and Company for seven years as a bookkeeper and an accountant. Then, in 1892, he became a real estate agent, in which profession he was still working in 1938. He formed the Fitzhugh Knox and Sons building firm through which he built many apartment houses. He was also a member of the Atlanta Real Estate Board, the Society of the Cincinnati (an organization made up of descendents of American Army officers in the Revolutionary War), and of St. Luke Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the Atlanta Historical Society. He researched the Knox family and published his findings in 1932 in the book The Genealogy of the Fitzhugh, Knox, Gordon, and Allied Families. He died on September 27, 1940.
