Reverend Richard Colden Ketchum letters

 Collection
Collection number: ahc.MSS198f

Scope and Content

This collection consists of two letters sent to Ketchum about Georgia's Ordinance of Secession. The first is from an unidentified individual who has travelled from Alabama to Georgia in order to sway the vote of the state legislature. His letter praises the passage of Alabama's Ordinance of Secession, and discusses the nobility of the cause. The second letter, from R. Campbell, is strongly opposed to secession. Campbell urges Ketchum to read a newspaper article entitled "South Carolina Sentiments," which Campbell claims exposes a group of South Carolinians who have worked toward the destruction of the Union for over thirty years. He also writes about "preventing bloodshed" and about trade along Georgia's borders.
