Biographical / Historical
Graydon Boyd Leake III (1962- ) was born to Graydon Boyd Leake Jr. (1938-2010) and Vinita Therrell Leake (1941-1990) in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Emory University in 1982 with a Bachelors of Arts in History and received a Master of Arts in U.S. History from Georgia State University. In 1993, Leake became the executive director of the Georgia Trees Coalition, an organization founded in 1991 by John Mixon (1937- ), Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission. The Georgia Trees Coalition was a partnership between several civic organizations, private corporations, and public agencies that organized tree planting projects for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The coalition beautified highways and roads designated as "Olympic Corridors," including Ponce de Leon Avenue and Peachtree Road. Several projects were also completed at major sites where Olympic athletes and visitors were hosted, including the Atlanta University Center and Nexus Contemporary Art Center (later Atlanta Contemporary) in Atlanta.

Bias in Description
As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information. We choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, and bias is reflected in our descriptions, which may not accurately convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materials. Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. In working with this collection, we often re-use language used by the former owners of the material. This language provides context but often includes bias and prejudices reflective of the time in which it was created. The Kenan Research Center’s work is ongoing to implement reparative language where Library of Congress subject terms are inaccurate and obsolete.
Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions. If you encounter harmful, offensive, or insensitive terminology or descriptions, please let us know by emailing reference@atlantahistorycenter.com. Your comments are essential to our work to create inclusive and thoughtful description.
