Biographical / Historical
The Alomar house and gardens on St. Marys Road in Columbus, Georgia, was built in the 1930s. The gardens and grounds were designed by well-known Atlanta architect William C. Pauley (1893-1985). The home took its name from portions of the original owner’s name, Alfred Owen Blackmar III (1884-1944). The Blackmar family were early residents of Muscogee County, and Blackmar managed his family's business. He married Mary Gordon (1884-1954) in 1910, and they had two children: Margaret “Peggy” Blackmar Howard (1915-1985) and Alfred O. Blackmar IV (1912-1968).
The gardens included a tea house, ponds, and stone wall with potting shed. The Blackmars were renowned for their gardens, particularly their daffodil, camellia, and orchid collections. They were active members of several garden clubs and flower shows, using their home as the centerpiece for garden tours and social events.
Following the death of Alfred Blackmar in 1944, Mary Blackmar remarried William H. Crawford (1886-1975) and continued managing the gardens and home tours alongside her daughter, Peggy Howard, until Mary’s death in 1954. Peggy and her husband, Colonel Claude M. Howard (1909-1999), lived at Alomar, and the gardens continued to be featured in garden events. Their son, Stephen Howard, and his family resided at Alomar until they sold the home in 1995.

Bias in Description
As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information. We choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, and bias is reflected in our descriptions, which may not accurately convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materials. Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. In working with this collection, we often re-use language used by the former owners of the material. This language provides context but often includes bias and prejudices reflective of the time in which it was created. The Kenan Research Center’s work is ongoing to implement reparative language where Library of Congress subject terms are inaccurate and obsolete.
Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions.
