Biographical / Historical

Reverend Joseph Wenger Blosser, M.D., (1844-1926) was born in Dayton, Virginia, to Dr. Jacob Blosser (1816-1882) and Elizabeth Wenger Blosser (1822-1903). In 1865, Joseph Blosser graduated from the Physio-Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio, and practiced medicine with his father in Elkhart County, Indiana, before moving to Jasper County, Missouri. In 1868, he married Margaret Stevenson Blosser (1845-1928), and the couple had five children: Clarence (1874-1924), Angie May (1876-1970), Linnie (1878-1971), Roy (1882-1931), and Allie (1871-1916). Blosser was ordained by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and worked as an associate minister for the Union Tabernacle at 87 East Merritts Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia, from 1870 to 1881.

In 1874, Blosser formed a drug manufacturing company called the Blosser Company and developed remedies for asthma, colds, and influenza. His most popular product was “Dr. Blosser’s Catarrh Cure,” a treatment for mild bronchitis in the form of cigarette containing dried anise, eucalyptus, and cubeb. In 1895, Blosser moved his family to Atlanta, Georgia. The business was incorporated as Doctor Blosser Company in 1902 and the company published articles and pamphlets about medical and religious topics. Blosser authored Health Secrets, published in Atlanta in 1907.

Bias in Description

As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information. We choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, and bias is reflected in our descriptions, which may not accurately convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materials. Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. In working with this collection, we often re-use language used by the former owners of the material. This language provides context but often includes bias and prejudices reflective of the time in which it was created. The Kenan Research Center’s work is ongoing to implement reparative language where Library of Congress subject terms are inaccurate and obsolete.

Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions. If you encounter harmful, offensive, or insensitive terminology or descriptions, please let us know by emailing reference@atlantahistorycenter.com. Your comments are essential to our work to create inclusive and thoughtful description.
