Administrative/Biographical History

The DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs Inc., DeKalb County, Georgia, was organized in 1948 to unify the efforts and objectives of individual clubs; exchange ideas, experiences, and problems; coordinate efforts in developing civic beauty; and to educate member clubs, youth, and the general public in various aspects of environmental awareness. The federation is a member of The Garden Club of Georgia Redbud District and the National Council of Garden Clubs Deep South Region. Comprised of numerous DeKalb County garden clubs, the federation's membership reached 175 member clubs in the 1970s. Governed by elected officers such as president and vice-president, the federation meets monthly and shares civic projects across member garden clubs. Previously the federation was based in Decatur and Tucker, but after a restoration effort for the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center Conservatory on Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, the federation moved their headquarters to the conservatory in 1989.

Since 1964 the federation has worked to promote environmental education and community beautification through H.A.N.D.S. (Home and Neighborhood Development Sponsors) projects at DeKalb County schools, parks, and at Callanwolde. In 1992, the federation, in cooperation with DeKalb County Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs, began an international tree planting project in Wade-Walker Park, Stone Mountain. Two hundred trees were planted, each native to countries participating in the Olympic Games held in Atlanta in 1996. Since 1971, the federation has hosted an annual flower show at Stone Mountain Park inspired by the Confederate yellow daisies (Helianthus porteri) that bloom in the park annually in September. The flower show has become a part of the annual Stone Mountain Yellow Daisy Festival which includes events such as an arts and crafts marketplace and live music.
