Administrative/Biographical History
Alexander Stephens Mitchell, called Stephens, was the second of three children born to Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) and his wife Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens (1872-1919). He had an elder brother, Russell Stephens Mitchell (1894-1894) and a sister, Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900-1949) who wrote "Gone with the Wind." Stephens Mitchell attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Beta Delta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Stephens joined his father and uncle, Gordon Mitchell, in the law firm Mitchell and Mitchell practising land title law. Like his father he was an historian. On 3 May 1927 Stephens Mitchell married Caroline Louise Reynolds (21 May 1902 - Aug. 1950), called Carrie Lou. She was the daughter of Fannie Hansberger and Joseph Shewmake Reynolds and the sister of artist Glascock Reynolds (1903-1967). Stephens and Carrie Lou Mitchell had two sons, Eugene Muse Mitchell (6 April 1931-8 Aug. 2007, married Virginia, lived in Michigan) and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell. After Carrie Lou's death in 1950, Stephens Mitchell married Anita Benteen (12 Aug. 1902-25 April 1978) the daughter of Frederick William Benteen. Stephens Mitchell was president of the Atlanta Bar Association, the editor of the Atlanta Historical Society Bulletin, a member of the Catholic Layman's Association, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Vincentian Society (Society of St. Vincent de Paul).
