Biographical / Historical
Albert Ferdinand Bellingrath (1867-1944) was born to Albert Bellingrath (1838-1903) and Mary George McMillan (1843-1923) in Atlanta, Georgia. He married Lillie Ruth Council (1874-1962) in 1896, and the couple had four children: George Council Bellingrath (1897-1977), Mary Alberta Craig (1901-1989), Lillie Ruth Pruitt (1907-2005), and Caroline Anne Bellingrath (1911-1937). Albert Bellingrath worked as a plumber for his own company, Bellingrath Plumbing Company.
Mary George McMilian was born to William Henry McMillan (1810-1901) and his second wife, Mary Caroline Muller Blue (1806-1860) in Quincy, Florida. They had six other children, including Ferdinand Dallas McMillan (1844-1920). Ferdinand Dallas McMillan enlisted with Company B of the Seventh Georgia Regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia in May 1861 as a drummer boy. He was subsequently elected 3rd Sergeant in May 1862 and was mustered out of service in July 1862 for being underage. McMillan also worked for Hunnicutt and Bellingrath Company, located in Atlanta, Georgia, which was under contract by the Confederate States of America during the Civil War to provide nitre and alcohol to the military. McMillan designed and built Fort Peace, also known as The Castle, located at 87 Fifteenth Street, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Bias in Description
As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information. We choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, and bias is reflected in our descriptions, which may not accurately convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materials. Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. In working with this collection, we often re-use language used by the former owners of the material. This language provides context but often includes bias and prejudices reflective of the time in which it was created. The Kenan Research Center’s work is ongoing to implement reparative language where Library of Congress subject terms are inaccurate and obsolete.
Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions. If you encounter harmful, offensive, or insensitive terminology or descriptions, please let us know by emailing reference@atlantahistorycenter.com. Your comments are essential to our work to create inclusive and thoughtful description.
