Scope and Contents
This collection contains daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and cased tintypes of Goldberg and Rich family members. Featured individuals include Marcus and Rachel Goldberg, as well as their children and families. Of special note is a photograph of Rosalind and Valerie Rich as children with an unidentified African American woman, who was likely employed as a family nanny or domestic employee.

Biographical / Historical
Marcus Rienzi Goldberg (1810-1889), a prominent Jewish businessman, was born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He married Rachel Solomon (1823-1910) and they had seven children, all born in Madison, Georgia: [Amalie?] (1844-1871), Alice (1845-1938), George (1847-1866), Ida Mae (1850-1926), Florence (1852-1928), Jeannette (1855-1899), and Maud (1857-1947). [Amalie?] married Mr. [?] Jackson, and they had one child: [Samuel or Stonewall?] Jackson (1861-?). Alice Goldberg married Julius J. Meyer, and they had one child: Bernard (1868-1944). Ida Mae (1847-1919) married Colonel George W. Roosevelt (1843-1907) in 1874. Florence married Montifiore L. Hutzler (1847-1919) in 1873. Jeanette married James E. Hetherington (1846 -1899). Maud married Morris Rich (1847-1928), co-founder of Rich's Department Store. They had two children: Rosalind (1880-1961) and Valerie (1881-1971). Rosalind married Herman Rosenheim (1876-1961) in 1901 and had two children: Richard Herman Rich (1901-1975), who legally changed his last name to his mother's maiden name, and Katherine Rosenheim Rieser (1906-1993). Valerie married Percy Howell Myers (1882-1957) in 1907 and had two children: Jane Rich Montag (1909-1991) and Betty Myers McAllister (1912-1990). Several members of the family are buried in the Jewish section at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
