Biographical / Historical
Brookhaven, a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, was established in 2012. In 2020, the Brookhaven City Council adopted a nondiscrimination ordinance against LGBTQ+ individuals (§ 19-12), the Richard Rhodes Nondiscrimination Ordinance, named in honor of Richard "Dick" Grover Rhodes (1937-2019), a LGBTQ+ rights advocate and leader, who helped write the ordinance before his death. Rhodes (1937-2019) was born in Lake Wales, Florida to Grover (1910-2003) and Gertie Johnson Rhodes (1912-2003). He served as the first openly gay delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1988. The same year he and Gil Robison (1947- ) also were the first openly gay candidates to run for the Georgia House of Representatives. He also served as the first openly gay chair of the DeKalb Democratic Party in 1992. In 2012, Rhodes received the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Fenuxe Magazine included him in the 50 Most Outstanding Individuals of Our Community as “The Trail Blazer.” In 2019, the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta awarded him Greeter of the Year. He was also a founding member of the Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), Atlanta Prime Timers, and the LGBTQ+ Archives and Special Collections Committee at the Fulton County Joan P. Garner Library at Ponce De Leon.

Bias in Description
As archivists, we acknowledge our role as stewards of information. We choose how individuals and organizations are represented and described in our archives. We are not neutral, and bias is reflected in our descriptions, which may not accurately convey the racist or offensive aspects of collection materials. Archivists make mistakes and might use poor judgment. In working with this collection, we often re-use language used by the former owners of the material. This language provides context but often includes bias and prejudices reflective of the time in which it was created. The Kenan Research Center’s work is ongoing to implement reparative language where Library of Congress subject terms are inaccurate and obsolete.
Kenan Research Center welcomes feedback and questions regarding our archival descriptions. If you encounter harmful, offensive, or insensitive terminology or descriptions, please let us know by emailing reference@atlantahistorycenter.com. Your comments are essential to our work to create inclusive and thoughtful description.
