Scope and Contents

This collection contains images of the Sugarman, Fader, Haas, and Kahn families. It primarily features identified portraits and family photographs. Of special note is a portrait silhouette of Carolyn Haas and Nathan Kahn Jr., as well as images of their wedding venue at the Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Sugarman (1823-1888) was born in Prussia (later Germany). He married Sallie Thornel (1833-1919) in 1854 and they had five children: Flora (1855-1932), Clara (1857-1947), Charles (1866-1936), Isidore (1859-1924) and Victor (1862-1923). Charles Sugarman married Emma Salinger (1865-1954) and they had one child: Sally Sugarman (1900-1937). Sally Sugarman married Felix J. Katz (1894-1986) in 1919 and they had one child: Norma Katz (1921-2017).

Flora Sugarman (1855-1932) married Joseph Fader (1833-1922) and they had three children: Amos Fader (1878-1881), Ilma Fader (1886-1965), and Edna Fader (1884-1957). Edna Fader married Herman Katz (1877-1958) in 1906 and they had two children: Martha Katz (1909-1999) and Ellen Katz (1912-2001). Martha Katz married Burton Wolff (1908-1997) in 1929 and they had two children: Benjamin Wolff (1930-?) and David Wolff (1933-2009). Ellen Katz married James Isaac Loeb (1908-1992) in 1932 and they had three children: Steven Loeb (1939-1944), Peter Loeb (1942- ) and Susan Loeb (1944- ).

Ilma Fader (1886-1965) married Herbert Joseph Haas (1884-1953) in 1909 and they had two children: Joseph Fader Haas (1911-2000) and Carolyn Emily Haas (1913-2008). Herbert Joseph Haas was born to Jacob Haas (1844-1909) and Caroline Amelia Haas (1848-1914). Herbert Haas earned a law degree from Columbia University and had a private law practice in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as Vice President of the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation and was a member of the Atlanta Bar Association. Joseph Fader Haas earned a law degree from Harvard University and later practiced law in Atlanta. In 1936, he married Betty Geismer (1913-2010) and they had two children: Susan Haas (1938- ) and Jeffery Haas (1942- ). In 1953, Joseph Haas served as the attorney for the Southern Regional Council and worked on their Voter Education Project. He was also involved in fundraising for the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

Carolyn Emily Haas (1913-2008) attended Connecticut College and the Parsons School of Design. She served as a board member for the Jewish Education Loan Fund and was also a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and the Service Guild of the Jewish Home. In 1936, Haas married Nathan Kahn Jr. (1909-1991) and they had two children: Ellen Judith Kahn (1945- ) and Michael Kahn (1942- ). Nathan Kahn Jr. was born to Nathan Kahn Sr. (1875-1964) and Julia Brickman (1880-1955). He had one sister: Sarah Jeanette Kahn (1912-1968).
