Scope and Contents
This collection contains photographs of the Wright family, primarily Ralph Edward Wright. Also included are images of Charles Whitefoord Smith’s residences. Of special note is a photograph of a surrey attached to a horse, as well as an image of unidentified individuals standing in front of the First Baptist Church in Newnan, Georgia.

Biographical / Historical
Arminius Wright (1829-1879) married Sallie Letitia Wright (1834-1861) in 1850 and the couple had five children: Homer (1850-1924), Alice Jenkins (1851-1929), Sallie Ella (1854-1904), James Arminius (1857-1873), and Fannie Hurt (1859-1938). After the death of Sallie Letitia, he married Sarah Amelia Bardwell (1836-1884) in 1862. They had four children: Ralph Edward Wright (1867-1907), Daisy Beatrice Wright (1869-1944), Sophie Pauline Wright (1873-1908), and Arminius Wright Jr. (1874-1927).
Sallie Ella Wright (1854-1904) married John Wesley Collier (1846-1910) in 1872 and they had one child: Albert Wright Collier (1876-1941). Fannie Hurt Wright (1859-1938) married Charles Whitefoord Smith (1856-1923) in 1881. Smith practiced civil law in Georgia starting in 1876. In 1915, he became a judge of the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit and in 1919, Governor Hugh Dorsey appointed him to the Georgia Court of Appeals. Ralph Edward Wright (1867-1907) served in the Spanish-American War and was a member of the Yaarab Shriners.
Sophie Pauline Wright (1873-1908) married Joel Thomas Daves (1872-1950) in 1894. They had four children: Dorothy Amelia (1896-1986), Pauline Katherine (1898-1973), Joel Thomas Jr. (1900-1958), and Daisy Frances Daves Smith (1902-1989). After the death of her mother, Daisy Frances Daves Smith was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Fannie Hurt Wright and Charles Whitefoord Smith. She attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and later earned a Master of Arts in History at the University of Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1932, Smith served as the principal of Decatur Girls High, until 1943 when she enlisted as a private in the United States Women’s Army Corps. Smith later wrote poetry and published three volumes of her work: Half-Breed (1956), A Fig and a Fither (1967), and Elegies (1981). She and Wilhelmina G. Barrett (1901-1981) lived together as companions until Barrett’s death.
