Biographical / Historical
Oliver Hazard Perry Juhan III (1830-1864) was born in Gwinnett County, Georgia, to Francis P. Juhan (1805-1879) and Eveline R. Juhan (1808-1849). He married Amanda Hutchinson (1831-1905) and they had five children, including Francis G. Juhan (1851-1932) and Stephen Alexander Juhan (1860-1933). Juhan received his law license from Gwinnett County on September 13, 1839. He enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army in 1861, and later became Captain of Company B in the Cavalry Battalion of Cobb's Georgia Legion, fighting alongside his brothers Lewis A. (1836-1927) and Francis F. (1832-1913). They participated in numerous battles, including the Seven Days Battle in Richmond, Virginia, in June 1862, and the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Oliver Juhan died while leading his regiment across the Rapidan River in Virginia at the start of the North Anna Campaign. Juhan's brother Francis buried his body in White Hall, Virginia; however, his gravestone is in Woodlawn Cemetery in Adel, Georgia.
