Biographical / Historical

Sarah Frances "Sallie Fannie" Grant Reid, known as the Belle of Georgia, was born to William Reid (1810-1873) and Martha Wingfield Reid (1814-1889). During the Civil War, she funded the Sallie Fannie Reid Guards, a military company from LaGrange, Georgia, that operated outside of the Confederate Army and whose members were legally exempt from military service. She also served as the secretary of the Ladies of the Soldiers' Relief Society. In 1866 she married Willian Daniel Grant (1837-1901). Grant owned Fannin, Grant and Company with his father, John Thomas Grant (1813-1887); served as a captain in the Confederate Army and as vice president of the Cotton States and International Exposition in 1895; and built the W.D. Grant Building in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1899. The Grants had three children: John William Grant (1867-1938), Sarah Frances Grant Slaton (1870-1945), and William Reid Grant (1872-1872).

William Reid Grant married Josephine Lochrane Connors (1906-1970), who was born to Lillian Lochrane Connors (1873-1964) and Georgie Washington Connors (1865-1943). Josephine was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Piedmont Evergreen Garden Club, and the Atlanta Junior League. Grant and Connors had a daughter, Lillian Lochrane Grant (1928-1988), who married William Edward Rudolph (1927-1996) in 1948.

Josephine Lochrane Connor's grandfather, Osborne Augustus Lochrane (1829-1887), was born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, to Edward Lochrane, an Irish physician. Osborne Augustus Lochrane was married twice, first to Frances Victoria Lamar (1830-1858) and then to Josephine Emma Freeman (1836-1919), he had five children who lived to adulthood: Idoline Lochrane Ellard (1860-1945), Elgin Cremorne Lochrane (1866-1893), Elma Bruce Lochrane Westmoreland (1869-1896), Lillian Lochrane Connors, and Ferdinand Bell Lochrane (1876-1944). Governor Rufus Bullock appointed Lochrane Chief Justice of the State of Georgia. During the Civil War, he supported Governor Joseph E. Brown against Confederate States President Jefferson Davis in their disagreement on conscripting soldiers.
