Biographical / Historical
John Usher (1831-1913) was born in Hamburg, Edgefield District, South Carolina, to John (1800-1859) and Mary J. Usher (1809-1896) and was the oldest of four children: Henry; Emma C.; and Sarah "Sallie" V. Bunch. In the early 1870s, he opened a photography studio at 206 Broad Street (later renumbered as 702/705 Broad Street), Augusta, Georgia. Usher employed Robert E. Williams (1834-1917), known as one of Augusta's first African American photographers. Williams became primary owner of the studio in 1888 with his son, Robert E. Williams (1858-1937), renaming the business, R. Williams and Son. Usher and Williams captured images of Augusta businesses, residences, markets, outdoor gatherings, natural areas, street scenes, and daily life for both whites and African Americans.
