Administrative/Biographical History

James Kollock Hines (1852-1932) was born in Burke, Georgia, to Joseph Henry Hines (1820-1871) and Susan Elizabeth Harrison (1824-1862). James Hines had three siblings, Susan Fowler Hines (1850-1908), Mary P. (1854-1925), and Joseph H. (1854-?). He received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory College (later Emory University) in 1872 before attending law school at Harvard University. He served on the Middle Judicial Circuit of Georgia for eight years, first as a solicitor from 1877-1881, then as a judge from 1887-1891; was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1884-1885; and was a justice in the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1922 to 1932. In 1874, he married Belle S. Evans (1861-1884) and they had two daughters, Susan (1881-1967) and Lucy Belle (1879-1933). That same year, Hines' sister Mary married Judge William Hansell Fish (1849-1926), and they had four children. After Belle's death, Hines married Cora Lawson McBride (1866-1953), a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in 1855. They had six children, Elizabeth Hannah (1886-1963), Cora Lawson (1895-1970), Mary (1891-1941), Willie H. (1898-?), Fredrick (1904-?), and Robert (1906-?). Hines' daughter Lucy Belle married Lester Miles Livengood (1885-1967) of Spokane, Washington, in 1915, and they had two children. His daughter Mary married rubber salesman and army veteran Paul M. Gunsaulus (1890-1972). They divorced and she married Sidney Lomax Daniel (1885-1985) in 1927. His daughter Cora Lawson married Edgar Vernon Carter (1889-1962) in 1916 and they had three children.
