Administrative/Biographical History
Dr. Chapman Powell (1798-1870) was an early settler of the Atlanta area. He served as sheriff of DeKalb County (1833-1834) and was a member of the Georgia Legislature (1836). Powell lived in a cabin near present-day Clairmont and North Decatur Roads where he practiced medicine. He and his wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Hardman Powell (1799-1850), had a daughter, Martha Ann Jincie Powell (1830-1917). Dr. Powell moved to Atlanta in approximately 1850 where he built a house at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis Streets. In 1856, Martha Ann Jincie Powell married Dr. Fielding Travis Powell (1828-1898), a distant relative. Two of their children were Frank A. (1857-1938) and Ella May (1863-1955). Additional biographical information about the Powell families has not been determined.
