Scope and Content

This collection contains images of the debutante ball at the Piedmont Driving Club December 4, 1940 on Mary Jo Brownlee's 19th birthday. Lillian Y. Salter (1920-1996) attended the ball and collected and identified most of the photographs. Included are photographs of guests, chefs, and servants in formal attire as well as decorations of the venue and food. Some of the identified attendees include Atlanta photographer Bill Wilson; Mary Virginia Adair; Betty Yopp; Connie Spalding Anderson; and Mr. and Mrs. Beverly DuBose, Jr.

Administrative/Biographical History

Mary Jo Brownlee (1921-2013), daughter of William Mungo Brownlee (1879-1962) and Lisbeth Howe Connor Brownlee (1884-1952), was a member of the Atlanta Debutante Club. She and her parents celebrated at her debutante ball held at the Piedmont Driving Club in 1940. Mary Jo Brownleee married Atlanta dentist Dr. Harry Anderson Crosswell (1916-1992) on October 17, 1941. By 1947 they had moved to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, where they raised four children: Harry Brownlee Crosswell (1943-), William Conner Crosswell (1946-), Robert Anderson Crosswell (1948-), and Mary Jane Crosswell Miller (1950-).
