Administrative/Biographical History

Rosalie Howell (1877-1970) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Evan Park Howell (1839-1905) and Julia Adelaide Erwin Howell (1843-1906). Evan Park Howell was Mayor of Atlanta from 1903 to 1905, an early telegraph operator, a Confederate Army officer, and the editor-in-chief of the Atlanta Constitution from 1876-1905. Evan and Julia had six other children: Clark Howell (1863-1936), Albert Howell (1866-1933), Effie Park Howell Foreman (1870-1943), Ida Erwin Howell McAliley (1873-1943), Adelaide Howell (1879-1957) and Evan Howell (1881-1934). Rosalie Howell attended West End Academy, Washington Seminary, and Agnes Scott College, and studied library science at the Carnegie Library in Atlanta. She worked as a Red Cross nurse during World War I, which earned her the Croix de Guerre from the French Government. After the war, Howell worked as a librarian in the 2nd Corps of the U.S. Army on Governor's Island, New York and travelled extensively.
