Administrative History

The Glidden Tours were events held by the American Automobile Association (AAA) to promote safer roads, automotive-friendly legislation, and general automobile acceptance. The tours attracted automobile manufacturers who competed to test their vehicles and use the events for advertising. The cars encountered many problems on the route.

Administrative History

The Governor of Georgia at the time, Hoke Smith, saw the potential for having the tour come south to promote the city of Atlanta and the South as a whole. In 1911, the tour traveled from New York City to Jacksonville, Florida, making an overnight stop in Atlanta. The tour ran from October 13 to 26 and featured 66 contestants; 21 of whom were from Atlanta, and 13 more who were from the State of Georgia. Roberta Marks of Athens, Georgia was the only woman in the race.
