Scope and Content
This collection contains photographs of the interior and exterior of General John B. Gordon's residence, Sutherland, in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, taken by commercial photographer Fred L. Howe (1857-1903) in approximately 1895. Also included are several photos of his funeral procession on Washington Street in Atlanta as his body was carried into the Georgia State Capitol building to lay in state.

Administrative/Biographical History
General John Brown Gordon (1832-1904) was an attorney, planter, Confederate States general, United States Senator from Georgia (1873-1880, 1891-1897), and the 53rd Governor of Georgia (1886-1890). He was born to Zachariah Herndon Gordon (1794-1886) and Melinda Gordon (1802-1867) in Upson County, Georgia. He married Frances Rebecca "Fannie" Haralson Gordon (1837-1931), in 1854. Gordon and his wife had six children: Hugh Haralson Gordon (1855-1937); Frank Gordon (1858-1907); John Brown Gordon, Jr. (1865-1884); Frances Smith (1868-1951); Caroline Gordon (1873-?); and Carolina Gordon (1877-1877). He studied law at the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Mystical 7 Society, one of the earliest college fraternities. Gordon commanded the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, and fought at the First Battle of Bull Run; the Battle of Malvern Hill; the Maryland Campaign; the Gettysburg Campaign; the Overland Campaign; the Valley Campaigns of 1864; the Siege of Petersburg; and the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse.
