Scope and Content

This collection contains images related to Thomas L. Weyandt’s work and research in community planning and transportation policy for the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia State University, and the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. Images include aerial photographs of the Atlanta metro area from the 1950s and examples of wheelchair accessibility at MARTA transit stations. Videos include 1996 Paralympic Games promotional content, city of Atlanta development initiatives, and the city of Atlanta 2002 Inaugural ceremonies of Mayor Shirley Franklin.

Administrative/Biographical History

Thomas L. Weyandt, Jr. (1947-?) graduated from Chamblee High School in Chamblee, Georgia, and received his bachelor's degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C. He served as Commissioner of Community Development and Director of Planning for the city of Atlanta under Mayors Andrew Young and Maynard Jackson. He was also Executive Director of Research Atlanta at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and was Director of Transportation for the Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee. His roles at the Atlanta Regional Commission included Director of Comprehensive Planning, Director of Transportation Planning, and Chief of Socio-Economic Analysis. His community involvement included the Atlanta Streetcar and the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority. He authored the chapter Envisioning Atlanta's Future in the book A Tale of Two Cities: Atlanta and San Antonio. Weyandt retired after serving as Deputy Chief Operating Officer for the city of Atlanta and Senior Policy Advisor for Transportation to Mayor Kasim Reed. He received the Founder’s Award from the Civic League for Regional Atlanta.

Video recordings were made on VHS cassette and can be made accessible only through conversion to digital video. Patrons who request access to the video content in this collection are responsible for digital conversions costs.

Physical Characteristics

Color slides and the color photograph are located in cold storage (CS) as indicated on the descriptive inventory. Patrons must allow 24 hours after retrieval of cold storage items before viewing materials.
