Scope and Content

This collection is comprised of images of the historic Midtown area in Atlanta, Georgia. The photographs were taken for draft nomination on the National Register of Historic Places for Midtown. Included are photos of churches, Henry Grady High School, stores and businesses, street scapes, apartments, and homes in the Midtown area. Types of homes photographed vary among bungalows, duplexes, row houses, carriage houses, alley dwellings, and cottages. Of special interest are photographs of the residences of Julian La Rosa Harris, Ralph McGill (editor of the Atlanta Constitution), and historian and artist Wilbur Kurtz. Architects and designers of photographed structures include Gottfried Norrman, W.T. Downing, Lewis Crook, Leila Ross Wilburn, and Haralson Bleckley.

This material is protected by copyright law. (Title 17, U.S. Code) Permission for use must be cleared through the Kenan Research Center at the Atlanta History Center. Licensing agreement may be required.

Administrative/Biographical History

Formed in 1972, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is responsible for managing the state's natural, cultural, and historic resources. Their mission is "to sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia’s natural, historic and cultural resources for present and future generations, while recognizing the importance of promoting the development of commerce and industry that utilize sound environmental practices."
