Administrative/Biographical History
The Braves franchise began in 1876 as a Boston team known as the Red Stockings, or the Reds. As the Cincinnati Reds became more prominent in 1882, Boston sportswriters rebranded the team the Beaneaters, a name that survived until the team was sold in 1906 to brothers George and John Dovey. Under the Dovey brothers the team was known as the Boston Doves. In 1910 the team was sold to a business syndicate headed by William Hepburn Russell who named the team the Rustlers. Upon Russell's death in 1911, the team was bought by George Gaffney, a political contractor with ties to Tammany Hall. Tammany, a political society, was named after a Delaware Native American chief and many of the Tammany elders were known as chiefs. Gaffney, a Tammany chief, called his baseball players his braves, and the name stayed with them, even as the owners changed, until 1936. From 1936-1942 the team was known as the Boston Bees, the winning name of a fan poll. A new group of owners restored the Braves name in 1942 and the name followed them to Milwaukee in 1953 and to Atlanta in 1966.
