Scope and Content

This collection contains cased portraits of family members of Irene Rose Smillie. There are images of Smillie's immediate family including her parents, sisters, and brother. There are also images of her mother's family including Smillie's grandfather, aunt, uncle, and cousin. The collection also contains photographs of Gibraltar, taken by Smillie during cruises across the Atlantic Ocean in 1911, as well as two watercolors painted by Smillie.

Administrative/Biographical History

Irene Rose Smillie (b. 1871) was born in Savannah, Georgia, to Robert Thomas Smillie (1829-1900) of New York and Harriet F. (Crandell) Smillie (1833-1883) of New Jersey. She had two sisters, Harriet Anna (1853-1935) and Ellen Westall (1851-1934), and a brother, Frank Chester (1855-1926). Her mother, Harriet F. (Crandell) Smillie, was the daughter of Nehemiah S. Crandall (b. 1806) and had a brother, Edward S. Crandell, and sister, Ann S. (Crandall) Tupman (b. 1834). Ann S. Crandall married William L. Tupman (b. 1829) in 1855, and they had a son, Edward T. Tupman (1855-1892). Irene graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, and studied art at the School of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. She was a member of the City Federation of Women's Clubs of Atlanta, the Reviewers Study Club, Washington Seminary Alumnae, as well as St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Additional biographical information about Irene Rose Smillie has not been determined.
