Scope and Content

This collection contains twenty-six cartes de visite of Confederate generals and politicians. Generals include Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, Stonewall Jackson, and Nathan Bedford Forrest among others. Politicians include images of President Jefferson Davis and Vice President Alexander Stephens as a young man. There is also an image of Emperor Napoleon III of France.

Administrative/Biographical History

Jane Jones (1885-1974) married Edward Houston Demere (1875-1922) of Savannah, Georgia, on April 7, 1915. Edward was the son of Raymond McAllister Demere (1843-1895) and Eliza McQueen (d. 1913). Raymond founded the Colonial Oil Company, and Edward's grandfather, Raymond, was a prominent Savannah businessman. Additional biographical information about Mrs. E. H. Demere has not been determined.
